I Cried in Biology Class…

What? Yeah, you read that right. Actually? Unfortunately. Why? Well, let me back up real quick.

Now, when I say crying, I don’t want you to think about me in the fetal position, curled up in the bathroom corner with tears streaming and the inability to catch my breath. That’s everything it wasn’t. My eyes were not puffy. My shirt was not soaked in salty tears. Instead it was a couple of tears in the span of 50 minutes as I was moved and overwhelmed by the complexity of the human body. So maybe the title is a little misleading, I don’t know what your definition of crying looks like, but regardless, I feel like at this moment I am being judged by you. That’s okay. I know it sounds completely exaggerated and awkward and kind of a stupid reason to cry, to be blunt. I get it. But let me better describe exactly what happened.

It’s always baffled me when Christians get uncomfortable with science or with history. It’s as if they think it’s always religion vs science + history. I’m not looking down on you as I used to think the same thing. As I started doing more research I began to notice that science and history greatly help the Christians’ claims. It ends up pointing not only to a god, but it points to Jesus. Non-Christian friends, please do not exit this browser yet. I kindly ask that you stay for at least the entire post. Read it, contemplate it and never visit my blog again if that is what you choose to do. But at the very least, please read through this post.

Biology seems to be a “hot topic” when talking to a Christian, right? How do Christians respond to the big bang theory? What do Christians think about evolution? Shall I continue? There’s this wonderful book called “I Don’t Have Enough Faith to Be an Atheist” and it does a terrific job at explaining how the study of human life and the study of the formation of the universe both shockingly line up well with the Bible. But I don’t want to spoil it all for you, go read it yourself and draw your conclusions.

“The more I study science the more I believe in God.”

Albert Einstein

You see, I’m in this biology class, technically it’s more of a biology crash-course for engineers. As I write this, I’ve gone to class for a total of two times with one class being the first day where we went over actual lecture material for approximately 15 minutes. Fast forward to the second day of class and I’m learning about the whole DNA to RNA to proteins process. I am mesmerized and amazed with how complicated the human body is. It’s one part of one system, but like, have you ever thought about how intricate it is? Our DNA carries our unique genetic code which is then copied or transcribed into RNA which is then used for proteins. And our code is some formation of four letters, C, G, T and A (and U), are you kidding me? I may have butchered that severely, I apologize to my pre-med friends, but you get what I’m saying. It’s so wonderfully complex! I see this and I see clear evidence for a Creator. Each organism has their own separate DNA, but also, all DNA is composed from the same Nitrogen-based molecules. The difference is the order. That’s all?

As I’m hearing about all of this in my biology class, I cannot help but tear up because I see overt intentionality. I see purpose. I see beauty in the nature of design. It was this moment of awe as my faith was reaffirmed in my biology class. I specifically remember muttering, with my mute button on, of course, “My God, my God, I see so much intentionality in Your design. Everything has a specific purpose.” My webcam was turned off as I had that little-kid type of grin. Sitting quietly, completely astonished, feeling so loved by Jesus and feeling so much love for Jesus. I am reminded of simple yet profound statements: I have worth. I have a purpose. I am fully loved. There is so much more than this imperfect life. I see the reason for a Creator.

That’s one part of one system. I think about how our brain works, I think about how our hearts are able to keep us alive, I think about we can create more life. It’s overwhelming. It’s beautiful. It’s phenomenal. Take a step back and fully absorb the intricacy of the human body. Or if you aren’t impressed with that, go and observe nature. There’s math in flowers. Our earth is in the most perfect position so that life can exist. It’s all so insane.

Biology doesn’t scare me, my non-Christian friends. To me, the intentionality and design of every species points to an Intentional Designer. I see art and I see beauty when I look at every single one of you, all made in the image of God as Genesis 1:27 claims. I cannot begin to see the world and the beautiful people of this world as just some lucky dice roll.

If I saw a note with a message on it, I could immediately tell you that it was written by someone, even if I did not see the messenger. And in that same way, I see how DNA is a set of instructions and it purposefully led to you being you, me being me, and my dog being my dog. It all feels too complex and I have no other explanation for it then pointing to some sort of Designer. You know you’re unique. You see beauty when you look at your loved ones. Regardless of what you think about the big bang theory, that also calls for a Creator, my non-Christian friends. A beginning calls for a Beginner. There was nothing and then there was something.

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. All things were created through him, and apart from him not one thing was created that has been created. In him was life, and that life was the light of men. That light shines in the darkness, and yet the darkness did not overcome it.” John 1:1-5

“Now faith is the reality of what is hoped for, the proof of what is not seen. For by this our ancestors were approved.By faith we understand that the universe was created by the word of God, so that what is seen was made from things that are not visible.” Hebrews 11:1-3

My Bible tells me that there was a Beginner. Nothing and then something, all created by and through God. Consider it so. The Bible consists of 66 separate history books that point to Jesus, all thrown together and held by one binding and we call it “The Bible”, may I suggest you at least consider the book of John? It’s only 21 chapters. Maybe this Jesus guy has more validity than you give him credit for…maybe.

You are loved unconditionally. You are made purposefully. You are worthy. Even if you don’t see that know that anyone who truly loves God with all their heart, soul and mind sees that in you. I see intention. I see purpose. I see something with so much value. You are so loved. I leave you with these set of verses, just stay with me for a few more sentences.

“Christ is the visible image of the invisible God. He existed before anything was created and is supreme over all creation,16 for through him God created everything in the heavenly realms and on earth. He made the things we can see and the things we can’t see—such as thrones, kingdoms, rulers, and authorities in the unseen world. Everything was created through him and for him. 17 He existed before anything else, and he holds all creation together. 18 Christ is also the head of the church, which is his body. He is the beginning, supreme over all who rise from the dead. So he is first in everything.19 For God in all his fullness was pleased to live in Christ, 20 and through him God reconciled everything to himself. He made peace with everything in heaven and on earth by means of Christ’s blood on the cross.” Colossians 1:15-20

Isn’t that absolutely profound? Consider it so. Thank you for reading.

  1. I have a real hard time fathoming an atheistic evolution process. For a long time the primary is still a literalistic creationism vs. an atheistic evolution, but I think there is a third scientific truth out there that handles what we observe far better than either of those poles.
