Before we start talking about the worst counselor, it’s important to mention this is part two of I Almost Chose Psychology which you can read here.
To summarize, before I came to mechanical engineering, I wanted to be a therapist or counselor for a long time. Although I made the switch from psychology to engineering, it wasn’t until my senior year of high school where I realized I would have been such a terrible counselor.
I am an ESTJ, but for this short story, let’s focus on the “T”. You see, when you take the test and I suggest everyone take it at some point (linked below), your third letter will either be T or F. Simply put, people who have Ts are more factual and people with Fs care more about feelings, usually.
There is no right answer between T or F, rather it’s a personal preference. An example of what may make you a T or F is your ability to fire someone from a company. The typical question is, would you be able to fire a loyal person from your company if they were not great at their job? Again, there is no right answer, but personally, I would be able to fire that person. Depending on if you agree or disagree may hint whether you’re a T or F.
Alright Kira, where are you going with this? I’ll tell you. Hang in there because this is where things get interesting.
Let me be honest. I’m not great with feelings. You see because I’m a factual person, I’m not always great with feelings. It’s not that I don’t care about people’s feelings, don’t get me wrong, but sometimes I don’t always know what to do when people express what they’re feeling to me. Strange right? Maybe some of you can relate, but I have a feeling a lot of you think it’s strange and it kind of is.
It never occurred to me then, but when I look back at it, I would have been a really terrible counselor. Those who know me personally, maybe you disagree, but I really think I would have been a bad therapist. It’s not that I don’t want to help, but rather, I don’t always know how to deal with feelings. That being said, I don’t know how I would be able to do that for a living.
What’s funny is how He knew before I did? He always does, but it truly is interesting. I do think He is the reason why I am not pursuing psychology anymore. I think He used my mom to convince me to keep taking more math classes. He knew before I did and before anyone else did. It blows my mind.
I didn’t tell you this story so you avoid telling me all your problems. I hope that isn’t your takeaway and if it is, I’ve failed as a story-teller. Trust me, I do like listening and helping. If you need someone to talk to, I’m here. Yes, sometimes I don’t always know how to handle feelings, but please talk to me if you need someone to talk to.
The takeaway is He knew and He knows. It might not always be clear, but He does have a plan. Even though there are times where you swear you know what’s right, I know I thought psychology was right, He knows so much more than you and me. It’s times like these where I need to constantly remind myself. He knows best; He really does.
Despite what you’re going through, despite what I’m going through, let’s figure out how to incorporate this takeaway in our lives. He knows best. Let’s Trust Him.
Take the test: Myers Briggs Type Indicator (Personality Test)
Yes. Thinking types generally struggle with understanding other people’s emotions. But there’s still hope for us… just look at Abraham Lincoln- INTP…You should have also being a lawyer. Judge Judy is also ESTJ…
